Professional criminal defense in proceedings of the European Public Prosecutor’s Office (EPPO)

The Public Prosecutor of the European Union

Since June 2021, the European Public Prosecutor’s Office (EPPO) has been the first independent and decentralized public prosecutor’s office in the European Union to prosecute cross-border crimes throughout the EU that damage the EU budget. In this context, suspects act in special structures set up to commit crimes, which are referred to as organized crime. In the 22 participating EU countries, there are delegated European Public Prosecutors who take action against fraud, corruption, money laundering and serious cross-border VAT fraud.

The European Public Prosecutor’s Office (EPPO) offers a number of advantages:

  1. Efficient coordination: Central coordination of investigations and prosecutions minimizes cross-border obstacles and delays.
  2. Specialized expertise: The EPPO consists of experienced public prosecutors with in-depth knowledge in the field of cross-border criminal prosecution.
  3. Uniform legal framework: The EPPO ensures that offenders are prosecuted against a uniform legal background, which leads to greater legal certainty.
  4. Protection of EU funds: Prosecuting financial crimes ensures that the financial interests of the EU and its citizens are protected.

The special feature of EPPO investigations

The special feature of investigations by the European Public Prosecutor’s Office is first of all the clarification of jurisdiction. In addition, it must also be clarified at the outset which national criminal law is applicable.

The European delegated prosecutor

In each of the participating EU countries, there are delegated prosecutors of the EPPO who are recruited among the best prosecutors of the national prosecution authorities. Usually, delegated prosecutors of the European Public Prosecutor’s Office speak several languages.

The importance of a specialized criminal defence lawyer

The special expertise of the delegated prosecutors of the European Public Prosecutor’s Office (EPPO) requires the appointment of an experienced criminal defense lawyer who is familiar with working in an international environment. International criminal proceedings are often characterized by complex legal and cultural peculiarities.

Criminal defense in EPPO proceedings by lawyer Salvatore Barba

Salvatore Barba has already been involved in several investigations by the European Public Prosecutor’s Office as an interest representative or defense lawyer. He has been working in an international environment for more than 20 years now, where he is used to communicating in different languages. In addition, for more than 15 years he focused on German and international commercial law, which enables him to combine criminal, commercial and tax law like few other defense lawyers. This experience gained over decades allows him to work in international criminal law and to assist defendants with his comprehensive expertise and commitment right from the preliminary proceedings.

How we work

Network

In criminal proceedings, a lawyer may only defend one defendant. In cases in which several defendants are being investigated, it is therefore necessary to fall back on other criminal defense lawyers. We have a large nationwide network of competent criminal defense lawyers. We also maintain business relationships with lawyers abroad, whether in the EU, the USA, Africa, Australia or Asia.

Specialized expertise in EPPO proceedings

Our lawyers have many years of experience in international criminal law and have successfully defended many clients in complex international criminal proceedings. Although the European Public Prosecutor’s Office has only been in existence since 2021, Salvatore Barba has already been involved in a European Public Prosecutor’s Office case.
